Brew Session was held at the home of David Comerford on March 6, 2004

Mash in occurred at 10:30 am. At the same time the granite blocks were added to the fire which had been going for a couple of hours already. After an hour mash time and an hour of runoff/sparge time the wort was brought to 180 degrees with the burner which was then shut off. The first block was taken from the fire and loaded into a homemade wire basket which was lowered into the wort. This produced some dramatic results not the least of which was a HARD boil. The 6 stones were enough to boil the wort for over an hour. Final SG was 1.077.

David "hot rocks" Comerford and Gary "big stones" Kunes split the 10 gal batch and kept one carmel covered stone each to put in their respective fermenters.

Jo Comerford made great biscuits for breakfast and cakes for desert. David grilled homemade kielbasa and hamburgers for lunch. As usual there was many beers to taste.

Besides the above mentioned members the event was attended by: Mark Graham, Tony Profera,Bill Lynch, some guy named Lee, David Jones, Marlond Meadows, and Karl Keyes who drove the farthest although he didn't start from the farthest point !

In what may have become an annual tradition, nine members and guests attended a brew session on Saturday March 3rd at which a steinbeer was brewed.

Simply put, a steinbeer is a dark ale which is heated by the inclusion of white hot stones (granite was used) into the wort boil. Five stones were used, each of which caused a 15-20 minute boil each. The sugars from the wort carmelized and burnt on to the stones which will eventually dissolve back into the finished beer and will also lend a smoky character to the beer.

The club wishes to thank our more than gracious hosts, Jo and David Commerford, for providing the perfect setting (not to mention perfect weather!) and Gary Kunes for providing guidance in the brewing process and for his incredible kielbasa.

As is typical at a CBM brew session, a number of great beers were sampled, this time many were homebrews.
