Carolina Brewmasters Club Meeting                                                     September 28, 2005

President

·         The next meeting will be held at the Mellow Mushroom on North Davidson Street at 6:30 on Wednesday November 2

·         Again, even with Oktoberfest staring us in the face, a significant number of brewers continued brewing!

·         It’s almost election time!!  Please consider submitting a nominee for one of our officer’s positions.  Contact Roman Davis (xzymurgist@aol.com) to submit a nominee.  All positions are up for election; President, VP Oktoberfest, VP Competitions, VP Recruiting, VP Social Activities and Secretary/Treasurer

·         The Pop the Cap fund raiser was held in September at Bruno Wichnoski’s home on Saturday September 10.  The Belgian beer tasting raised more than $800.00 for PTC!

·         Information was circulated to the women brewers on the club roster related to the Queen of Beer Women’s Homebrew Competition being held on October 22 at the Northern California Homebrewers Festival.  Entries need to be received by October 9.  Details can be found at http://www.hazeclub.org/QOB/QOB.html.

·         Creative Loafing ran a story written on the Carolina Brewmasters.  A few members were interviewed lately for their input.   Thanks to Jason Teeter for allowing the photographer to attend his brew session.  The story can be found at http://clnlb.us.publicus.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050928/CHATALK06/509280385/-1/CHA.  I also provided input to 2  journalism students at UNCC who were writing articles on the Oktoberfest

·         Upcoming beer events:  The world Beer Festival in Durham (October 8) and the Asheville Brewgrass Festival (October 22)

Competitions

  • The MALT competition was held on Saturday September 24.  They had about 325 entries (significantly down from the 450+ last year).  Thanks to the 5 CBM members that attended.  If we’re going to expect judges and stewards to make the trip from out of town to assist in the US Open, we’re going to have to show more support to other competitions
  • Winners were Kevin Deaton (1st place Belgian Golden, 2nd place Dunkelweizen), Tom Henderson (2nd place Imperial IPA), Charles Scheffer (1st place English Special Bitter; his first brew!!) and Bill Lynch (1st place Wee Heavy, 1st place Heather Ale, 3rd place Imperial IPA, 3rd place Coffee Stout)
  • Big winners were the Chicken City Ale Raisers of Gainesville, GA, MALT, DEA and Palmetto State Brewers.  The CBOY standings will be posted shortly
  • Next CBOY events are TRUB in Durham on October 29th  and Palmetto State Brewers on December 3rd
  • Todd Bowman will recap the current CBOY standings
  • Reminder:  The schedule for 2005 AHA Club Only Competitions is:
    • September/October – European Amber Lager – Category 3
    • November/December – Baltic Porter – Category 12C
    • January 2006 – Belgian Strong Ale – Category 18
